Ghana has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI)-driven health programme aimed at strengthening the country's healthcare system while ensuring the responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies. The initiative is being implemented through a partnership involving the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Government of Japan. It seeks to improve healthcare delivery by integrating AI into national health systems while promoting innovation that benefits all citizens.

A major objective of the programme is to establish a strong governance framework for AI in healthcare. This includes developing policies and regulations that encourage the safe, transparent, and ethical use of AI technologies while protecting patient privacy and data security. The initiative also focuses on building the digital capacity of healthcare professionals so they can effectively adopt and manage AI-powered tools within the health sector.

The programme will support the integration of AI into health information systems to improve disease surveillance, strengthen early warning systems, and enhance responses to climate-sensitive health threats. By using advanced data analysis and predictive technologies, Ghana aims to improve decision-making, increase the resilience of its healthcare system, and ensure more timely and effective public health interventions. Special attention will be given to reducing inequalities in access to healthcare services and ensuring that vulnerable populations benefit from digital innovations.
